BENEFITS OF LASER THERAPY

Using laser system, dentists are able to quickly return their patients to work and reduce the number of necessary follow-up visits. This is due n part to the lack of needles, drilling, and pain that is associated with this treatment option. Stress and anxiety are reduced as well, as is the need for anesthetics during treatment.

There are numerous benefits of using lasers in surgery. To begin, lasers seal lymphatics and reduce the need for post-surgical dressings while shrinking capillaries and improving hemostasis. They also depolarize the nerves, thus reducing postoperative pain, and destroy many bacteria and viral colonies that can cause potential infection.

Other benefits derived from the use of lasers include improved efficiency and expanded capabilities. As the treatment is less painful overall, patient comfort is increased without the need for prescription drugs, and the needs for local anesthesia and postoperative follow-up are diminished.

Dr.Parthasarathi Speaks on how he is committed in transforming dental treatments in Andhra Pradesh  by adapting LASER technology.
  1. Hello Doctor! I would like to know about how these LASERS are used? I mean what are the problems / diseases that you are treating with LASERS in your hospitals?

    • Technology is amazing. Man has started taking control over the Nature. He is solving many diseases in medicine using Lasers.  Lasers are changing the whole delivery system of dentistry. They are changing patients' perception of dentistry, which has not been popular. Having no pain associated with dental work is a huge change. I just did treatment for a cavity on a six year old boy without any injection or anesthesia.
We use lasers for a variety of dental problems.
    • If we have to cut soft-tissue (gums, cheek, skin e.t.c) as a part of selected dental treatment, we are currently using LASERS to do this work very easily - painless and no injections.
    • Drilling of teeth is the most tricky thing that LASERS do. We are using these to cut hard-tissues (Tooth Material and Cavities).
    • Some treatments require cutting through the bone and we are happily using these lasers to do this work with best comfort to our patients
    • Many gum problems require little lengthy surgical procedures with considerable time. LASERS are changing the treatment of gum problems
    • Root Canal Treatments are a major part of the work that dentists do. All these procedures are being performed with LASERS in countries like US. We also have started doing these procedures. We are committed to provide best possible treatments to our patients.
    • There are many Surgeries of mouth region that are being revolutionized by the use of LASERS and we use them where ever we feel that the patient will be benefited. Impacted teeth (like wisdom tooth) removal is a little scary thing to many patients. I advice them to get a feel of LASERS and they can see for them selves how simple it can be!
    • There are many other applications that we are currently working out to the best of our knowledge based on the research world-wide.
    • Cosmetic dental procedures and Smile designing are also on the desk of laser benefited treatments. Giving a great smile has become much more efficient with LASERS

  2. What are the benefits that lasers offer patients?

    • This is indeed a very good question. The major initiative for the LASER applications is to bring the patients as much comfort as possible as far as possible. Today at our hospital we are able to do a good number of procedures without giving an injection of anesthesia, and without having to suture. The patient’s comfort level with the laser is a big part of using it, as opposed to using a scalpel or a drill. Healing after surgery is much better as Lasers have the capability of closing capillaries and blood vessels, which is very important advantage. When lasers are used to cut soft tissue, the tissue doesn't shrink like it does over a period of time after being cut with a scalpel.
    •  Many dental treatment require drilling to tooth and this can some time weaken the tooth and will require additional treatment to compensate for this. Lasers don’t weaken the tooth structure.

  3. Are lasers safe?

    • One of the major concerns in the application of lasers to medicine and dentistry is the fact that lasers produce heat. The erbium lasers are absorbed highly by water and the crystals of teeth/bone (hydroxyapatite). In the laser application, a water spray is present to keep the surface temperature of the tissue the same or two degrees Celsius less.
    • But believe me their use is being done based on a great deal of world-wide medical research

  4. We have heard of LASERS in the past. Is it the same thing or is there any thing new in Lasers technology?

    • As I mentioned earlier technology is amazing and yesterday's technology is history in front of today's technology.
    • The new generation of lasers use a different mechanism of overcoming the heat that is produced during the procedures. They use water to offset the laser's heat. As a result, the effect on teeth, gingival and bone tissues is more gentle. There is no carbonization of the tissue (no charring).
    • LASER Anesthesia is a great addition. It allows us to perform a variety of dental procedures without the use of Injection anesthesia.
    • The newer Erbium lasers can be used to biopsy tissue, for cavity prep, for gum surgeries, for bone reduction, and other things-all without using anesthesia.
    • Lasers are changing the whole delivery system of dentistry. They are changing patients' perception of dentistry, which has not been popular. Having no pain associated with dental work is a huge change.

  5. Can you tell us some thing in simple words about what has research shown about the use of lasers in dentistry?

    • Much of research is going on in this field of dental LASERS. All in all, evidence has proven that laser use is better. There is evidence of the effectiveness of lasers in dentistry, but more proof and studies are yet to come. My strong prediction is that the future of using lasers in dentistry is very, very bright. Studies have proven that results of using lasers in dentistry are consistent.

  6. Do you mean to say there are no drawbacks with lasers and lasers are the best?

    • Any thing on earth has its own advantages and drawbacks. I have already mentioned about the wide range of advantages. The drawbacks are that it’s a small industry, and there are a small number of dental lasers being made. The units are quite expensive, which is a significant issue right now. Hopefully, there will be a better supply In the future. Another disadvantage is that it is little difficult to apply these lasers, for which the operator skill is an important factor.

  7. What do you have to say about the future for the application of lasers in dentistry?-

    • New laser models will be developed— not new wavelengths, but different frequencies with a wider range of power and more flexible in use for more different procedures. Smaller lasers will be developed, with a different variety of features. Studies are showing that the use of lasers is on constant rise. With all these fantastic advantages I am sure dental treatments will become absolutely painless and patient will be happily waiting for his turn to get his smile back on.
